Equatorial Guinea’s Baltasar Remanded in Custody for Sex Tape Allegations
Baltasar Engonga, formerly Director-General of the National Financial Investigation Agency in Equatorial Guinea, is currently being held at Black Beach Prison in Malabo, reliable sources have confirmed.
The former head of the anti-corruption agency was taken into custody recently regarding allegations of creating over 400 compromising recordings involving spouses of influential individuals in the country.
During a probe into financial irregularities, officials from ANIF conducted an unannounced search of the 54-year-old economist’s home and office, uncovering CDs documenting his illicit relationships with several married women.
As the footage leaked online, causing a media uproar, Equatorial Guinea’s President, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, dismissed Engonga.
Confirming the situation, French online blog Afrikmatin reported that Engonga, who was officially removed from his role on November 6, 2024, was subsequently chained and transferred to Malabo Central Prison. He faces charges of corruption and embezzlement.
As reported by UGStandard, an online newspaper, Engonga was already being held at Malabo’s notorious Black Beach Prison on public fund embezzlement charges, as stated on state television TVGE, when the sex tapes started spreading on social networks.
A fact-checking report published on Wednesday revealed that Dubawa verified Engonga’s arrest on corruption charges, with the individual currently being held in custody at Black Beach Prison.
