Police Detain VeryDarkMan After Honouring Invitation
The Nigeria Police Force detained Martins Otse, a prominent social commentator operating under the pseudonym VeryDarkMan, on Thursday evening.
VDM’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, disclosed that his client was detained following a police invitation, although the nature of the alleged offence remained unspecified at the time of reporting.
Adeyanju announced on X Thursday that his client had responded to an identical invitation on Wednesday.
His post read, “Our client, VDM, has been detained after honouring a police invitation just like yesterday. VDM has been consistent in stating that the Nigerian Police are our friends, even when we all know they are not.”
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, proved abortive, as calls to his line went unanswered.
The authorities have criticized VDM’s use of police uniform in his latest video and launched an investigation to ascertain the source of the attire.
In the video, VeryDarkMan wore a police uniform and jokingly introduced himself as a “Chief Superintendent of Police of the Online Division.”
In response to the widespread backlash resulting from his behavior, he released an apologetic video on Thursday regarding his use of clothing resembling the official police attire.
VeryDarkMan cautioned Nigerians to procure proper authorization before wearing police attire to preclude misunderstandings or adverse legal outcomes.
